Winter or “cold weather” tyres feature a snowflake on the tyre wall and should be used once the temperature drops consistently below 7°C. Depending on where you are in the UK, this usually happens between October and March. Winter tyres have different tread patterns which individually perform better in the snow. These types of tyres are manufactured from a softer rubber compound. Winter tyres are proven to stop quicker and are also less prone to skidding when the temperature is under 7°C.
Here at Childwall Fiveways Auto Centre, we carry a large stock of winter and summer tyres. We also have local tyre deliveries up to three times daily. So if we don’t have your particular size in stock, we will usually be able to get it the same day.
In the UK, there is currently no legislation that forces us to fit winter tyres. There are other countries, even within the EU that legislate for this with substantial fines, up to €5000 for noncompliance. If you are driving to an EU country during the winter period, please check the local tyre laws for the area which you are visiting. Even though there are no restrictive regulations, fitting winter tyres during the colder months in the UK will certainly not hinder you. It may even help you to stay safe during our many cold spells. Winter tyres also reduce the risk of aquaplaning in wet conditions.
Winter tyres are a comparable cost to summer tyres. Here at your local car garage, we can give you advice on which tyres would be best for your car. Call the owner Ged, and he will be more than happy to help and advise you of your options.
When you purchase winter tyres at Childwall Fiveways Garage, we will change your tyres back to summer tyres for free. We will do this for the life of the tyres.
